What is Cast Stone?
Cast stone is a masonry product to provide architectural trim, ornamentation or functional features on a building and other structures. Stronger and more durable than natural cut building stone, cast stone is made from a mixture of fine and coarse crushed stone, cement, color pigments, chemical admixtures and water The cast stone mixture can be customized to perfectly resemble a variety of natural stones. There is no need to paint or texture cast stone, as it can be customized during the manufacturing process. Plus, because cast stone begins as a semi-liquid mixture, it can be reinforced with steel and molded to your exact design.
Since the early 1920’s, cast stone has earned widespread acceptance in the architectural community as a suitable replacement for many masonry materials for all types of natural cut building stones. Cast stone is a highly versatile architectural precast building material which looks like, and is usually stronger than, weathers better, and has greater color consistency, and it can be reinforced and cost less than natural cut stone. The cost per unit for cast stone depends greatly on individual component design, component repetition and specifications. On average, however, cast stone cost less than quarried stone because it is a molded product and each piece does not need to be carved individually and freight. Quarried stone usually needs to be hauled over long distances.
Cast stone is the desired product for remodels and restoration because of its versatility and ease to replicate deteriorating natural stone on existing structures.
